What is a UL Certification?

The Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) is a safety organization dedicated towards ensuring products and systems are clear of potentially dangerous hazards. To mark a product as being cleared through testing by the Underwriters Lab, a UL approved label is attached. The clearance can also apply to the label itself, ensuring it will stay legible and intact throughout the products lifespan. This way, relevant safety and warning information is always clearly visible on the product. Click on each code number to learn more.

PGDQ2 – Marketing and Labeling Systems
PGGU2 – Materials

PGGU2 covers the materials used to make labels, only requiring the material manufacturer to include the UL label. These products include blank label stocks and adhesives that are usually sold to label and printing converters for use in production of PDGQ2 and PGJI2 labels. Less strict label testing is required as warning and cautionary certification is not necessary.

PGJI2 – Printing Material

PGJI2 covers blanks and unprinted stacks as well as printed labels that use additional printing typically by OEM manufacturers through thermal transfer, laser or hot stamping. Products in this category are sold to end-use product manufacturers and can be die cut and include blank areas or spaces where information is to be added in later at the time of the products completion. Both the label material and thermal ribbon as well as any additional inks for printing must all be found compatible and tested in accordance with UL 969 standards.

PGIS2 – Limited Use

PGIS2 is comprised of categories of labels, tags, and placards evaluated for compliance with specific UL standards that are different from those typically found in UL 969. These requirements may be less stringent and specifically limited towards use of the types of products covered by these standards. This includes products such as electrical equipment enclosures, power supply cords, decorative lighting products, or gate operators.
